What do [brackets] mean?
[Brackets] are used to indicate text added into the sentence for ease of reading. Very often these get used when adding in sentence subjects that have several valid options given the context. Or adding in parts of a sentence that wasn’t in the Japanese that English really needs.
Why is the wording so grammatically clunky at times?
These are much more “translations” than they are “localizations”. This is mostly due to the fact that my impression of the scripts I translate is that the official translations of them focused so heavily on the “localization” aspect that they was done at the expense of the “translation” aspect. Trying to get at the original Japanese meaning was why I started translating the scripts in the first place. Sometimes that makes for clunky English…
Are you going to translate the entire script of a given game?
No, that’s too much work. What gets translated are the parts of various games I’ve found to have significant differences between the English and Japanese. Usually these are areas that have to do with explanations of key lore concepts, world-building, or significant characterization moments.
