The signing of the Continental Accord marks the beginning of the modern era of
Valisthea. Where the realm had once been riven by hatred and mistrust, the Accord
built bridges, effecting many of the areas of realm-wide cooperation that persists to
this day—the shared currency, shared calendar, and common system of Bearer ownership chief among its epoch-making achievements.

Alas, in the years since the Accord’s signing, many of these old rifts have reopened.
It is for us to follow in the steps of our forebears, and wholeheartedly endeavor to
usher in a new age of peace and unity.

Treatment Diary

Today Clive visited the infirmary to have me dress a laceration on his left
forearm. I cleaned and stitched the wound, and instructed him to rest the arm so
that it could heal—but not an hour later, he was leaving on another mission.
This must be the hundredth time he’s disobeyed my instructions. The next time
he comes to me for treatment, I’m tying him to the bed.

accounted for, he did a tally and was satisfied when he counted thirteen.

This time, earth from the vicinity of Lostwing was used as the cultivation soil for the investigation.
Two of the six plants germinated, but they all withered in less than five days.
In all previous investigations, the plants died after germination,
suggesting that no matter which location’s earth is used for soil, it has a deficiency of the nutrients necessary for growth.

Mixed equal parts first-rate vineyard humus from Gaultand’s Bales with
deadland soil. Of the six cuttings planted therein, two survived to flower, only to wither and die within a sennight.

Even amalgamated with the finest imperial loam, the Blighted earth is still
effecting a nutritional deficiency. It might be remedied with some further source
of nourishment—saltpeter, or potash, or the dung of a racing chocobo. This
shall be the subject of my next round of experiments!

【Marinated Chocobo】

1. Strangle an old chocobo (carefully drain the blood)
2. Cut off the head and legs and remove the internal organs
3. Completely wash the meat
4. Mix water, wine, honey, salt, seasonal herbs, and spices together to make a seasoning sauce
5. Steep [the chocobo] in the seasoning sauce in a sink for one day
6. Take [the chocobo] out from the seasoning sauce and stuff it with bread and nuts
7. Bake [the chocobo] slowly in low heat

To Marinate Yard Chocobo

Prepare hen by draining blood and removing both head and feet. Offal
(particularly the heart and liver) should be set aside for later use.

Stir into a deep bowl watered wine (preferably of the red variety), honey, salt,
pepper, nutmeg, and any other seasonal savory herbs if you so desire. Add to the
bowl the dressed bird and let lay in a dark room for a single turn of the sun.

Break the breastbone and ready your force-meat thusly: chop together the heart
and liver of the chocobo and mix it with the crumb of a stale barm and pepio
(or kupo) nuts soaked in boiled cream, beaten mace, and as much thyme as will
lie on a gilpenny and fill the bird (but not overly so).

Lard the breast with boar bacon and spit the bird, tying it at both ends that the
force-meat not spill into the coals. Roast until skin is golden brown, taking care
to baste regularly with drippings.

Wines that have a strong tart [flavor] from the grape’s skins and seeds
are suitable for long-term fermentation.
Wines like this are put into wooden barrels that let air into them,
and so ferment while being gradually exposed to the air,
which alleviates the tartness and deepens the color.
Also, the aroma from the wood barrels transfers [to the wine] and makes it more mellow.
This turns it into a rich wine with a complex flavor.

The Mysteries of Vinification

While some winemakers will remove the skins of the grape after pressing, leaving
both skins and seeds in the juice to commingle creates a must that is better suited
for extended aging, ultimately resulting in a more refined wine. Then, once the
wine calms and settles sufficiently, the skins are removed, and the must is then
transferred to wooden barrels of oak or chestnut which, by allowing air to leech
into the wine, impart deepened levels of complexity, introducing rich aromas and
improving texture, all while lessening bitterness.

《Report: Regarding the Stone Monuments》

After the Drake’s Tail Mothercrystal Disappearance,
small relics (from now on called “stone monuments”) in various places have begun operating.
Order members were dispatched to investigate.

【Northern Velkroy Desert】
The stone monument was visually confirmed, but could not be touched due to a sandstorm.
We will conduct a new investigation at another opportunity.

【Draco’s Deep】
The stone monument was confirmed and touched, but nothing particularly changed.
There was no reaction to the impact of weapons,
so there is no progress in the investigation presently.
Separately, we plan to collect leads from old literature.

The investigation will continue as there are other stone monuments that have begun operating in addition to those mentioned above.

Lord Cyril,

Acolytes stationed across Valisthea reported a curious change in the primeval
structures we have come to refer to as “monoliths” following the fall of Drake’s
Tail and the change in the skies. Allow me to present the preliminary findings of
our archaeologians’ investigations into those monoliths most near at hand.

We were able to visually confirm the “activation” of the structure in the
northern reaches of the Velkroy, but a sandstorm forced our temporary retreat.
We will make a second attempt when the wind drops.

In Drakos Deep, our team was able to make direct contact with the monolith.
However, no further change was observed upon touching its surface, nor upon
dealing it several stout blows with both fist and blade. Whatever the purpose of
its activation, it would appear to be other than that of the defensive echoes we
have encountered among previous relics of the Fallen and their predecessors.

We shall continue our investigations both of the monoliths proper, and of any
historical writings that might refer to them, and inform your lordship forthwith
should they produce any discoveries of note.

A follow-up report on the ethnic minority (from now on called the “People of the Mountains”)
who fled to the territory of the Republic of Dhalmekia.
The village of the “People of the Mountains” that is being monitored by the Order
is frequently visited by soldiers under Hugo Kupka’s command and cargo.
Presumably, it seems like he is personally protecting the entire village.

Further discoveries from our acolyte ensconced within the recently displaced
mountain dweller’s remote settlement.

The diminutive tribe’s main village appears to be in receipt of regular deliveries
of supplies from Hugo Kupka’s Men of the Rock. On inquiring with the locals,
it became apparent that they have the deepest respect for the one they call Lord
Kupka, but whether he has merely bought their loyalty, or if there is some deeper
connection between the tribe and Titan, remains unclear.

Whenever I visit Twinside, the capital of the self-governing dominion, there’s always lots of people.
Among them, merchants, sailors, travelers and people [working] in various jobs gather in taverns.
When miscellaneous people gather, gossip blooms over food and alcohol.

One time, a red-faced sailor said this to me.
“Do you know about 《Phantom Island》?”
He said there is an island that floats [in mid-air] that suddenly appears on the trading routes of the merchant ships.

Travels in Valisthea

No matter the season, Twinside’s streets bustle from dawn to dusk with visitors
from across the realm. Its inns and boardinghouses overflow with merchants,
seafarers, travelers, and tradespeople of all stripes. And where such sorts gather
and ale is in no short supply, rumor and hearsay are soon doled out with equal abandon.

‘Twas from a ruddy-faced midshipman that I first heard tell of the Shimmering
Isle, that was said to emerge occasionally from the mists along a certain well-
sailed shipping route. No man had ever seen it more than once, giving rise to
rumors that it was no more than an apparition—and an ill-omened one at that.
“They say them as sees it twice never makes it home to tell the tale,” growled the
midshipman, his eyes fair glistening with morbid relish.

いつ訪れても、自治領の首府ツインサイドは人が多い。
その中でも酒場には、商人、船乗り、旅人と様々な職分の者が集う。
雑多な人が集まれば、酒の肴に噂話の花が咲く。

あるとき、赤ら顔の船乗りが私に言った。
“あのたは《幻の島》を知っているか”と。
商船の交易路に、忽然と現れる浮島があるという。

だが、二度見た者はおらず、誰もが幻だと信じ込むことから、
《幻の島》と呼ぶらしい。

“二度見たら、生きて海から帰れんのかもな”
赤ら顔の船乗りは笑った。

As you are no doubt aware, Lord Bernhard, there was once a race of men who
commanded the most forbidden of forbidden magics. But did you ever here tell
of the Executors——those charged with driving out these heretics? The order had
its origins in the Crystalline Dominion, by whose rulers’ decree it was tasked
with the protection of mankind, and sent forth to extinguish the forbidden
magic wherever rumors of its use might arise. Having in due course succeeded in
their mission, and driven the utterers of the unutterable from the land, these
secretive souls withdrew from the stage of history, never to be heard from again.

《Legendary Creatures: Moogles》

Moogles are fey who appear in a fairy tale
that is widely passed down in Valisthea—— “The Kind Neighbor”.

Their cute appearance is of a fluffy body covered in white fur,
tiny wings and a marvelous pom-pom on its head.

Their personality is meddlesome and careless,
but they are kind beings who help people with their work from behind the scenes.
They are said to like sweets, and if candy is left by the window,
it will have completely disappeared by the next day.

Everyone thought the Moogle fey are a fairy tale——
but actually, they existed in reality.
Their name is the 《Moogle Tribe》, which is said to be an illusionary beast tribe.
The “white beasts that walk not the earth” that appear many times in old literature,
really refers to the “Moogle Tribe”.

Why did the Moogle Tribe change their appearance to the fey Moogle that was passed down to today?
This book will draw near to that mystery…

Kokuyōka: I’m pretty sure this is a reference to how Moogles changed their appearance as the Final Fantasy series went on.

The Folklorist’s Fabulary

The Moogle

No spirit or sprite appears more often in Valisthean folktales than the humble
moogle. Though they are occasionally painted as mischievous souls akin to
pixies or imps, most stories depict them as clumsy yet congenial spirits who
delight in helping mankind with their daily labors.

They are said to have sweet tooths—leading to the common superstition that
one must not leave cakes or other sweetmeats uncovered overnight, lest naught
remain but crumbs come morning.

In appearance, they are described as being covered head to toe in soft, white
fur, excepting the small, dark wings by which they are somehow able to take
flight, and the brightly colored pom-poms that protrude from the tops of their
heads. And yet, there is one detail regarding the moogle that most find more
remarkable than even the orb that tops its brow. The fact that the creatures
actually exist!

“Preposterous!” I hear you cry, “Everybody knows that moogles are the stuff of
legend!” I quite agree—but every legend has its basis in truth, and in the case of
the moogle, the fact may be not so dissimilar to the fiction. Ancient bestiaries
list the “white mole whose feet do not touch the ground” among the beasts of
the realm—and the illustration beside the name? Why, it is none other than the
moggle!

Of course, it is true that the creatures are not known to still survive in the
Twins in the modern day. Perhaps their miniature wings carried them other
climes? Perhaps they were hunted to extinction? Or Perhaps—just perhaps—
they do still live among us, hidden away far from human view…

《伝説の生き物 モグクーリ》

モグーリとは、ヴァリスゼアに広く伝わるおとぎ話——
“やさしいおとなりさん”に登場する妖精である。

白い毛に覆われたフワフワな体に小さな翼を持ち、
頭に不思議なポンポンのある可愛らしい姿。

その性格は、お節介でそそっかしいが、
陰ながら人の仕事を手伝ってくれる心優しき存在だ。
甘いものを好み、お菓子を窓辺に置いておくと、
翌日には綺麗に消えているという。

誰もがおとぎ話と思っていた妖精モグーリ——
だが実は、現実に存在していたのだ。
彼らの名は、幻の蛮族といわれる《モーグリ族》。
古文献に幾度も登場する“地を歩かぬ白き獣”とは、
まさに“モーグリ族”のことを指し示していた。

モーグリ族はなぜ妖精モグーリと姿を変えて今日に伝わったのか。
本書ではその謎に迫る⋯。

《Balmung Prison: Regulations》

Balmung Prison is a military facility that also detains
Bearers captured inside and outside of Waloed.

• The objective of this facility is the training, breading and management of the military legendary beast Kuza
  and it falls under [the category of] top military secrets.
  For that reason, [someone who] leaks the installation’s objective will be severely punished.
• The detained Bearers will be used to train the military legendary beast Kuza.
  Any other use requires the administrator’s approval.

Balmung Dark – Writ of Designation

The Kingdom of Waloed hereby designates this facility a prison for the detainment of Bearers both foreign and domestic.

– The purpose of this facility is to rear and train a Kuza beast for deployment in
the field.
– The aforementioned purpose is a matter of strictest secrecy, and any mention
thereof is to be punishable by death.
– Captive Bearers have been provided solely for the pursual of the
aforementioned purpose. Express permission is required for use of Bearers in any
other capacity.

《バルムンク監獄 規則》

バルムングク監獄は、ウォールード内外で捕らそたべベアラーを、
収容する軍事施設でもちる。

• 本施設の目的は軍用魔獣クーザーの訓練･飼育･管理であり、
  最高軍事機密に該当する。
  そのため、設置目的の漏洩は厳罰に処す。
• 収容したベアラーは軍用魔獣クーザーの訓練に使用する。
  その他の使用については、管理者の承認を要する。

《Kuza Military Project Draft》

The Kuza, a military magical beast in training, is far more ferocious
compared to previous magical beasts, and can be expected to [achieve] high results as a weapon.
However, in training, it still cannot distinguish between friend and foe,
making it infeasible to deploy on the battlefield with regular soldiers.

For that reason, we propose a strategy to deploy it in a mixed unit with Bearer-Soldiers,
[so it can] wipe out the enemy army together with the Bearer-Soldiers.

Recommendation Concerning Kuza Beast Deployment

The Kuza has long been recognized as an especially aggressive species. This
being the case, it was hoped that successful deployment on the battlefield might
be a means of inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy.

In exercises conducted thus far, however, the beast has proven incapable of
distinguishing between allied and enemy combatants. As such, deployment
alongside regular troops is not recommended.

It is proposed instead that Bearer captives be employed in order to draw enemy
focus, and the best then driven into the fray in order to achieve maximum benefit with minimal loss of Waloeder lives.
